City awarded Community Crossings funds for 2024

Tuesday, November 7, 2023

AUBURN, Ind. – Close to $2 million in road improvements will be coming to the City of Auburn in 2024 as part of Governor Eric J. Holcomb’s Next Level Roads program.

Gov. Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation awarded $91.5 million as part of the state’s Community Crossings matching grant program to cities, towns and municipalities for 2024 on Friday, Nov. 3. The cities and towns within DeKalb County receiving funding included the cities of Auburn, Garrett and Butler along with DeKalb County.

The City of Auburn was awarded $937,500, which will be matched by the city for a total of $1,875,000.

“Community Crossings continues to provide opportunities for Indiana local communities, large and small to make connectivity and safety road improvements for Hoosier families and our visitors,” said Gov. Holcomb during the event. “The importance of this matching grant program is immediately obvious as we take our award-winning statewide infrastructure network to the next level.”

The $1.875 million will be used for several road improvements within the city. Those projects include:

  • Fifteenth Street reconstruction from Touring Drive to the railroad tracks. The project is a complete reconstruction featuring new curbing and sidewalks on the north side of Fifteenth Street. An asphalt berm will be installed on the south side with ADA cub ramps throughout the project. Signalization at 15th Street and Grandstaff Drive will be updated and two storm sewer lines under Grandstaff Drive will be replaced. Fifteenth Street from Touring to the railroad tracks will be milled and resurfaced.

Road improvements also include several paving projects within the City. Those projects include:

  • North Jackson St. from 7th to 1st streets
  • Bent Tree Court including new ADA ramps
  • Eckhart Avenue from 7th Street to Essex Drive
  • North Indiana Avenue from 7th Street to North Street
  • North Main Street from 7th Street to North Street

The projects will be completed during 2024.
