S.R. 8 access management plan unveiled

AUBURN, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) unveiled its Traffic Access Management Plan for State Road 8 during a public information meeting Thursday evening at McKenney-Harrison Elementary School.

The public information meeting afforded local residents the opportunity to see the first schematic of the proposed S.R. 8 median construction and intersection improvements, scheduled to be completed in 2026.

The project aims to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes, reduce congestion and improve mobility for pedestrians along S.R. 8 from Grandstaff Drive to Touring Drive.

Improvements include a raised center curb, turn lanes to Touring Drive and Grandstaff Drive intersections, ADA compliant sidewalks and consolidation of driveway access for businesses to improve safety and mobility.

The proposed median plan includes three left turn lanes along the corridor to allow for left hand turns or “U-turns” in each direction.

The raised center curb will:

  • Reduce exposure to right angle collisions, often the most severe crashes, by restricting left turn movements.
  • Promote consistent speeds with less turbulence on S.R. 8.
  • Simplify left turning movements by only having to manage one direction of oncoming traffic at a time.

INDOT will host a public hearing on the project in early 2024 with right-of-way acquisition to begin during the spring of 2024.
Utility work will take place in 2025 with construction to potentially begin in the spring of 2026 with completion during the fall of 2026.

Additional information on the project can be found at INDOT4U.com or on Facebook @Indiana Department of TranspQR CODEortation: Northeast. The QR code will take you directly to the update page.
